Contact Your Department or Program
Meet with your advisor (for department contact information, go to the Graduate Programs Directory.
Obtain any departmental handbooks or other necessary materials available.
Attend all workshops and orientations offered by your department and The Graduate School. (Scheduled dates for these should be available to you by the beginning of August.)
Registration
Get advised through your department. Make sure your advisement hold has been lifted.
Get oriented to Registration with the Registrar's FAQ. You will need to refer to the Master Schedule to obtain the schedule codes needed for registration.
Go online to VIP (Visual Information Processing) and select Academics to register for classes. To access VIP, use your social security number and PIN number which is initially set to your birth date (MMDD, remember what you change it to!). If you have trouble using VIP you will need to contact University Technology Services (UTS) at 803-777-1800. If you have any holds on your registration, contact your department or The Graduate School.
Please see Bursar FAQ. Go to "Financial" on the VIP menu and chose "Fees, Tuition and Payment". Any financial aid available to you will be shown.
You may apply your financial aid at this time but any remaining balance on your tuition will need to be paid as described in Bursar FAQ. If you need to pay by check instead, do nothing on this screen and go instead to the Bursar's Office to pay your bill.
Immunization Form
All students, part time and full-time, (born after 1957) must have an immunization form on file with the Student Health Center. Failure to do so will put a hold on your registration. For further information please go to the Immunization Office.
Legal Residency
Proof of legal residency is required for obtaining in-state tuition. For instructions on providing the necessary documentation go to http://www.sc.edu/bursar/residency.shtml.
(NOTE: International students with assistantships and out-of-state students with assistantships automatically qualify for instate tuition.)
Student Health Insurance
If you are choosing the University health insurance you will see the insurance cost included in with your tuition and fees.
If you already have insurance and want to request a waiver of the University policy you will need to go to the Thomson Health Center website. Please check this website beginning in July for the waiver deadline. No waivers will be approved after the deadline.
DO NOT WAIT TO MAKE SURE YOUR COVERAGE IS IN PLACE. All full-time graduate students (enrolled in 9 hours or more), all graduate assistants, and all international students are required to have health insurance coverage.
International Students
International Programs for Students is dedicated to providing the services and support needed for
international students to pursue their educational dreams here at USC. Our staff pledges to assist students prior to arrival and
throughout their study.
Student Parking Permits
You will need to register your vehicle with Parking and Vehicle Registration if you are going to have it on campus.
You may apply for the permit at the VIP website, by mail, or at the Pendleton Street Garage.

Student ID Card
The ID station is located in the basement of the Russell House Student Union.
You will need your Student ID card to check out materials at the library, to use the fitness facilities, to get tickets to athletic events, etc.
There is no cost to the student.
You will need to show one of the following: (a) US driver's license, (b) Military ID, or (c) Passport.
Athletic Event Fee
This is an optional fee for graduate students. However, if you chose not to pay the fee you will be unable to get any student priced tickets for campus events such as football or basketball games, concerts, etc.
This fee may be paid at the time you pay your tuition or any time at the Bursar's Office at Petigru. (For the current amount go to the Bursar Fee Schedule.)
Students who will need to pay this fee are those who are taking between 1 and 11 hours of coursework. If you are taking more than 11 hours the fee is included in your tuition.
